# Correct as at 31 January 2010. Past performance is not a reliable guide to future performance.

Gross performance enables you to compare the performance of other investment structures you may have with that of your investment bond, as it represents the performance of the underlying investments with no allowance made for management fees, operating expenses or tax.

Net Indicative performance shows more clearly the estimated impact taxation and fees have upon this 'tax-paid' investment structure. The performance is an assessment of returns to investors when taking into account an estimate of management fees, operating expenses and the potential tax to be paid by the bond in the current financial year.

The Tax Rate paid by an investment bond can only be determined at the end of each financial year. Under current legislation the current maximum rate the bond will pay is 30% of taxable income but depending on the underlying investments this rate may in fact be lower. However, where the fund made a loss for the year, the tax rate is actually a tax credit and can be higher than 30% due to other deductions the fund is allowed to make for tax purposes.  For illustrative purposes the rate used to calculate returns for 1 year or less is the tax rate for the 2008/09 financial year (see below). The actual rate paid may differ to that in the example below and this would affect actual returns. For returns quoted for 2 years or more, tax rates have been determined using actual historical tax paid.
